Hornets Open League Play With Win Over Auburn Riverside

The Enumclaw High School Boys Water Polo Team opened league play on Tuesday, September 16 with a 15-8 win over Auburn Riverside.

The Hornets started the scoring early, when senior Bryce VanHoof scored 15 seconds into the game, but the Ravens tied it up 15 seconds later on a goal by Raven center Erik Snyder.  Ethan Horan scored two, and Jack Pugh scored one in the opening quarter. but the Hornets trailed Auburn Riverside 5-4 after the first quarter. 

Enumclaw's VanHoof took over the second quarter, scoring three, while the Hornet defense double and triple-teamed Snyder, to hold the Ravens scoreless in the second quarter, for a 7-5 Hornet advantage at halftime. In the third period Enumclaw kept up the defensive pressure, again holding Auburn Riverside scoreless, and the Hornet counter-attack came to life, with VanHoof scoring three more, and senior Quinn Warner scoring two goals in a 27 second span.

The two teams played evenly in the final period, with the Ravens scoring three, and the Hornets three – two more by Warner, and one from VanHoof – for the 15-8 final score.

Final scoring for Enumclaw had VanHoof with eight goals, Warner with four, Horan scored two, and Pugh added one.  The Hornets registered 28 steals in the game, led by VanHoof and freshman Nathan March with seven each, and Pugh with six. Goalkeeper Austin Kaehn had 10 saves in three quarters of play.

The Hornets host the Auburn Trojans on Thursday at 7:30.
