Hornets Extend Winning Streak to Four

The Enumclaw Girls Water Polo Team extended their winning streak to four with a 15-4 win over Rogers on Friday in Puyallup.

The visiting Hornets controlled the game from the beginning, and held Rogers scoreless until the final quarter. Enumclaw's squad managed 23 steals in the game, led by Erin Stucker's 11. Freshman goalkeeper Megan Lesmeister gathered eight saves in the win.

On offense, eight Hornets scored, led by Stucker, with four goals, Katie Larrea with three, Ali Ballard and Kelsey Sonneson with two each, and Hannah Kinniburgh, Allie Larrea, Annie Birklid, and Alexis Firlotte with one goal apiece. Firlotte also led the team in assists, with three.

The Hornets face defending State champion Gig Harbor on Tuesday, at the Tides' home pool. Game time is scheduled for 3:30.

Enumclaw Improves to 3-1 in League Play

The EHS Girls Water Polo Team improved their league record to 3-1 with a convincing 20-4 win over the visiting Peninsula Seahawks on Thursday afternoon at the Enumclaw Aquatic Center.

The Hornets got off to a fast start, with a goal by center Annie Birklid 18 seconds into the game, and three goals in the next two minutes, by Ali Ballard, Erin Stucker, and Hannah Kinniburgh. By the end of the opening quarter, Enumclaw led 7-1.

Enumclaw got scores from all of their available field players, led by senior Ali Ballard and junior Hannah Kinniburgh, with thee goals each. Also scoring for the Hornets were Bella Davenport, Allie Larrea, Katie Larrea, Annie Birklid, and Alexis Firlotte with two goals apiece, and Kelsey Sonneson, Erin Stucker, Alina VanRuff, and Logann Erskine with one each.

The Lady Hornets travel to Puyallup on Friday to face Rogers, in a 3:30 contest.

Lady Hornets Beat Auburn Riverside 13-4

The Enumclaw High School Girls Water Polo Team improved their league record to 2-1 with a 13-4 win over Auburn Riverside at the Auburn Pool on Tuesday, March 22.

The Lady Hornets came out blazing, scoring five goals in the opening period, while their stingy defense held Auburn Riverside scoreless. In fact, Enumclaw's defense held the Ravens scoreless until 29 seconds into the third period, when Malia Mason scored. The Hornets had scored nine when Riverside threw in their first goal.

The two teams played even through the second half, with both teams adding four goals, for the 13-4 final.

Scoring for Enumclaw were Annie Birklid, with four goals, Ali Ballard with three, Hannah Kinniburgh with two, and Kelsey Sonneson, Erin Stucker, Alexis Firlotte, and Katie Larrea with one goal each. Goalkeeper Megan Lesmeister registered nine saves in the win.

The Hornets host Peninsula in another league game on Thursday, at 4:30.

'Open Pool' Workouts Start at Enumclaw

The Enumclaw Aquatic Center and Enumclaw High School’s Water Polo Teams will be offering Open Pool water polo workouts this Spring, on Monday and Wednesday nights, from 8:00 to 9:30.

Water Polo workouts are intended for middle school and high school boys who are interested in joining the EHS Boys Water Polo Team. Workouts are supervised by EHS coaches, led by veteran high school players, and cost $3.50 each.

Puget Sound Polo Starts Boys Spring Polo

Tacoma's Puget Sound Polo Club started Spring practices on March 8. Spring practice is held on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Wilson or Mount Tahoma High Schools and is open to all 7th-12th grade students who are interested in learning how to play water polo, or improving their water polo/swimming skills.

The Spring season is designed to introduce the sport of water polo to new athletes as well as continue the development of seasoned athletes. The Spring season is crucial for those athletes who would like to participate in Junior Olympics this Summer.

Enumclaw Gets First League Win

The Enumclaw Girls Water Polo Team got their first league win of the 2011 season with a 19-7 victory over the Auburn Trojans on Thursday, March 17.

Auburn got on the scoreboard first, scoring their first goal 92 seconds into the game, but Enumclaw responded with an Allie Larrea goal with three minutes left in the period, and an Erin Stucker goal with 33 seconds left in the opening period.

Stucker added three fast break goals in the second quarter, and Allie Larrea and Ali Ballard each added a goal, to give the Hornets a 7-3 advantage at halftime.

In the third period, Annie Birklid scored two goals, and Stucker, Alina VanRuff, Kelsey Sonneson, and Hannah Kinniburgh each scored a goal, to give Enumclaw a 13-4 lead going into the final period.

The Hornets added six in the final period – two from Katie Larrea, and one each by Allie Larrea, Alexis Firlotte, Kinniburgh, and Stucker.

Nine players scored for Enumclaw in the win, including Stucker with six goals, Birklid with three, Kinniburgh and Allie and Katie Larrea with two goals each, and Ballard, Sonneson, VanRuff, and Firlotte with one score apiece.

The Hornets are now 1-1 in league play, and 1-2 overall. They face Auburn Riverside in a 7:30 contest on Tuesday, March 22 at the Auburn Pool.

Hornets Lose League Opener

The Enumclaw Hornets lost their opening league game on Tuesday, March 14, to the Auburn Mountainview Lions.

The Hornets got on the scoreboard first, on a goal by senior Alina VanRuff, and held a 1-0 advantage at the end of the first quarter. Auburn Mountainview rallied to take the lead in the second period, on two goals by Amanda Nutall.

The Lions scored four in the third quarter, to take a 6-3 lead into the final quarter, and added another four in the fourth period.

Scoring for Enumclaw in the loss were Ali Ballard, with two goals, and Kelsey Sonneson, Erin Stucker, and VanRuff with one goal each.

On Thursday the Hornets travel to Auburn for another league game, against the Auburn Trojans. Game time is scheduled for 5:30.

Enumclaw Loses Opener to Curtis, 8-6

The Enumclaw High School Girls Water Polo Team traveled to Lakewood on Monday night to face perennial powerhouse Curtis; the Hornets lost a close one, 8-6.

Enumclaw took the lead early, 91 seconds into the game, on a goal by senior Erin Stucker, but the home team Vikings rallied to score three in the first period, to take a 3-1 advantage into the second quarter. The Hornets earned two goals from Kelsey Sonneson and one from Ali Ballard, while holding Curtis to a single score in the second quarter, to tie the game 4-4 at halftime.

Annie Birklid scored on a two meter backhand to keep the score tied 5-5 after the third period, but the Vikings added three, while holding Enumclaw to a lone Katie Larrea goal in the final quarter, for the final 8-6 score. Freshman goalkeeper Megan Lesmeister had 12 saves in her first varsity action.

The Lady Hornets begin league play on Tuesday, March 15, when they host Auburn Mountainview in a 4:30 game at the Enumclaw Aquatic Center.

Hornets Finish 1-1-1 at Jamboree

The EHS Girls Water Polo Team finished with one win, one loss, and a tie at the SPSL Girls Water Polo Jamboree on Saturday, March 12 at Lakes High School in Lakewood, WA.

In the Hornets' first game, against Mt. Tahoma, the Enumclaw girls took a 13-2 victory from Mt. Tahoma. Senior Ali Ballard finished with five goals, and Annie Birklid and Alina VanRuff scored four each.

In Enumclaw's second game, the Hornets lost a physical contest to the Wilson Rams, 6-4. Ballard scored three in the loss, and Kelsey Sonneson scored one.

In the lady Hornets final game, Enumclaw came back from a thee point deficit to tie the Auburn Riverside Ravens, 5-5. Birklid scored two in the final game, and Ballard, Alexis Firlotte, and Katie Larrea each scored one.

The Hornets return to Lakes High School on Monday for a 7:00 p.m. game against the Curtis Vikings.

Hornets Close Second Week with Maroon-White Scrimmage

The Enumclaw High School Girls Water Polo Team closed their second week of practice with a Maroon-White scrimmage at the Enumclaw Pool on Friday, March 11.

The Hornets White team, coached by Ann Bettencourt and Garrett Hall, beat Enumclaw's Maroon team, coached by head coach Bob Averill, 14-7.

Ali Ballard led all scorers, scoring seven goals for the victorious white team. Hannah Kinninburgh and Annie Birklid scored three each for the white team, and Katie Larrea added one. Erin Stucker led the scoring for the maroon team, with four goals. Allie Larrea, Kelsey Sonneson, and Alina VanRuff each scored a goal for the maroon squad.

On Saturday, March 12, the Hornets travel to Lakes High School, in Lakewood, WA, to open the season with the SPSL Girls Water Polo Jamboree. The Enumclaw girls will play three abbreviated games – at 11:00 against Mt. Tahoma, at 1:40 against Tacoma's Wilson High School, and at 3:40 against Auburn Riverside.

Monday the Hornets face Curtis High School at the Lakes Pool, and on Tuesday Enumclaw begins league play against Auburn Mountainview, in a 4:30 home contest.
