Hornets Claim First Win of the Season

Enumclaw High School's Boys Water Polo Team claimed their first win of the 2015 season on Tuesday, September 29, outlasting Kentwood for a 17-14 victory.

The two teams started out close, with the score tied five times in the first half. With the score tied 8-8 at halftime, the Hornets outscored Kentwood 2-1 in the third period, and stretched out the lead in the final quarter. The Hornets outscored Kentwood 7-2 in the first 5:07 of the fourth quarter before Kentwood's Andrew Portin and Rhoni Lyons combined for three goals in the final 1:06 to narrow the margin.

Five Hornets scored in the win. Nathan March scored six goals, Kyle Morgan scored five, and Evan O'Neill scored four. Jayson Bates and Adam Percival each scored one. Goalkeeper Brett Butler tallied 11 saves and an assist.

For Kentwood, Rhoni Lyons scored five, Andrew Portin scored four, Patrick Knox added three, and Colin Bryant scored two.

The Hornets travel to Auburn on Thursday for another league contest, against Auburn Mountainview at 5:30.

Tuesday's Game vs Emerald Ridge Cancelled

The Tuesday, September 22 EHS Boys Water Polo game vs Emerald Ridge has been cancelled, because no game officials are available.

The two teams have re-scheduled the game for Wednesday, October 7; 8:30 at the Enumclaw Aquatic Center.

Changes to Hornets' Schedule

Several changes have been made to the EHS Boys Water Polo Team schedule recently:

The Hornets home game vs. Kentridge, originally scheduled for this Thursday, September 24, has been re-scheduled to this Wednesday, September 23, at 8:30.

Additionally, Enumclaw's game at Emerald Ridge scheduled for Thursday, October 15 has been moved to Friday, October 16, at Rogers High School, at 7:15.

Lastly, the game at South Kitsap, originally scheduled as the Hornets' season opener on September 10, will be played on Monday, October 26, at 4:00, at the South Kitsap Pool.

Hornets Open Season 0-2 in League Play

The Enumclaw High School Boys Water Polo Team opened league play this week, suffering losses in their first two games of the season.

On Tuesday, the Hornets dropped their home opener to Auburn Riverside 15-10. Enumclaw started slow, and the Ravens built a 5-0 lead until Hornet sophomore Kyle Morgan broke up the shutout on a counterattack goal in the second quarter.

Scoring for the Hornets in the loss were: Nathan March with five goals, Evan O'Neill with three, and Brett Butler and Morgan with one goal each. Three Hornet goalkeepers – Nathan March, Evan O'Neill, and Brett Butler – combined for 16 saves.

The Hornets traveled to Auburn on Thursday to face the Auburn Trojans, and returned home with a 10-8 loss. Against the Trojans, Enumclaw built a 2-0 lead in the first quarter before Auburn mounted a 5-0 rally in the second period, giving the Trojans a 6-2 lead at halftime.

Auburn outscored the Hornets 2-1 in the third period, but Enumclaw outscored the Trojans 5-2 in the final period; all five fourth quarter goals were scored by Hornet senior Evan O'Neill – including three in the final 1:06 – to limit the final deficit to two goals.

O'Neill finished with five goals. Sophomore March scored two, and freshman Ben Hauswirth scored his first career goal in the first goal of Thursday's game.

The Hornets return to Auburn this weekend for the Auburn School District Water Polo Tournament. Enumclaw opens tournament play on Friday against Auburn Mountainview, at 3:00, and faces Puyallup Friday at 4:20. Enumclaw returns Saturday for four more tournament games.

Auburn Tournament Schedule Posted

The Auburn School District Boys Water Polo Tournament Schedule has been released.

The tournament, hosted by the Auburn School District, will take place on Friday, September 19 and Saturday, September 20. Eight teams will participate – Auburn, Auburn Mountainview, Auburn Riverside, Emerald Ridge, Enumclaw, Puyallup, Shorewood, and Stadium. All teams will play two games on Friday, and four on Saturday. The event takes place at the Auburn High School Pool, 516 4th Street NE, Auburn, WA.

The Hornets will open the tournament on Friday with a 3:00 game against Auburn Mountainview, and play their second game of the day at 4:20, against Puyallup. Enumclaw will play their first game on Saturday at 8:20 against Stadium. The Hornets will play their fourth game of the tournament on Saturday, sometime between 9:40 and 11:40, depending on the results of their earlier games. Their fifth game will be between 12:20 and 2:20 on Saturday, and their final game will be between 3:00 and 5:00.

Regular Season Play Starts This Week

The Enumclaw High School Boys Water Polo Team, along with 14 other Washington State teams, will open regular season water polo play this week. Eight additional teams opened their regular season last week.

The Hornet squad is small this year, with only  nine players on the roster – veterans Evan O'Neill, Jayson Bates, Brett Butler, Vahid Hosoda, Nathan March, Kyle Morgan, and Adam Percival are joined by newcomers Ben Hauswirth and Chase Maris. Two teams this year, Inglemoor and Lakes, do not have enough players for competition.

The Washington State Boys Water Polo League has four divisions. The Kingco Division has teams from Bellevue, Mercer Island, Newport, Roosevelt, Sammamish, and Shorewood. Curtis, Emerald Ridge, Mark Morris, Puyallup, and Rogers make up the South Division. Enumclaw is in the North Division, along with Auburn, Auburn Mountainview, Auburn Riverside, Kentridge, and Kentwood. The Narrows Division includes Bainbridge Island, Gig Harbor, Peninsula, South Kitsap, Stadium, and Wilson.

The Hornets open their regular season on Tuesday, September 15 against Auburn Riverside, in a 7:30 game at the Enumclaw Aquatic Center.

Thursday's Game at South Kitsap Cancelled

Due to a scheduling mishap, the Enumclaw High School Boys Water Polo Team's season opener at South Kitsap, originally scheduled for Thursday, has been cancelled. The two teams are working to reschedule it for a later date.

Instead, the Hornets will open their season on Tuesday, September 15, at home against league rival Auburn Riverside. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Emerald Ridge Jamboree Saturday at Rogers HS

The Emerald Ridge Boys Water Polo Jamboree will take place on Saturday, September 12, at Rogers High School, in Puyallup.

The Enumclaw High School Boys Water Polo Team will not be taking part in this jamboree, as the Hornets competed in last weekend's Curtis jamboree.

Ten other schools will be competing at the Emerald Ridge Jamboree, including: Auburn, Emerald Ridge, Gig Harbor, Kentridge, Kentwood, Mark Morris, Puyallup, Rogers, Roosevelt, and Stadium.

Competition Starts This Week

Hornets & Friends at Saturday's Curtis Jamboree
The Enumclaw High School Boys Water Polo Team launched their 2015 season on Saturday, at the Curtis Jamboree, in University Place, WA.

The Hornets were short-handed for the jamboree, with veterans Evan O'Neill, Nathan March, Kyle Morgan, Adam Percival, and Vahid Hosoda, and first-year players Ben Hauswirth and Chase Maris available. Curtis players Alex Hwang, Chase Mageo, Preston Pounds, and Cameron Weller joined the Hornets in the jamboree games.

Regular season play starts this week for all teams. The Hornets are scheduled to travel to Port Orchard on Thursday to face South Kitsap at 3:30. The week's other games are posted below:
