Enumclaw 7, Rogers 2

The Enumclaw Girls Water Polo Team beat Rogers, 7-2, at the Rogers Pool on Saturday, March 23 in a non-league contest.

Bailey Sexton led all scorers with three goals.  Sophomore Hayley Sonneson and freshman Grace Sales each scored two for the Hornets.  Junior goalkeeper Megan Lesmeister had 13 saves for Enumclaw.

For Rogers, Beau Keldenhouse and Miranda Barkley each scored one.

The Hornets travel to Sumner on Tuesday to take on Bonney Lake/Sumner; game time is scheduled for 3:15.

The Hornets are no 3-1 in league play, 4-2 overall.

Hornets Beat Kentridge/Kentwood 9-2

The EHS Girls Water Polo Team beat the visiting Kentridge/Kentwood team 9-2 on Thursday at the Enumclaw Pool.

Both teams started slowly, scoreless after five minutes.  Freshman Grace Sales scored her first goal of the season to put Enumclaw ahead 1-0 late in the first quarter.  The Hornets came to life in the second quarter – Hayley Sonneson scored in the first minute of the quarter; Bailey Sexton scored three goals in less than a minute, and freshman Anna Daventport and goalkeeper Megan Lesmeister each scored in the final three minutes of the half.

Sonneson added two goals in the third quarter, to put the Hornets ahead 9-0.  Katie Bliden and Haleigh Burton each scored for Kentridge/Kentwood in the final period.

Sonneson and Sexton each tallied three goals for the Hornets, Sales, Anna Davenport, and Lesmeister each scored one.  Lesmeister gathered 10 saves.

The Hornets are now 3-1 in league play, and travel to Puyallup on Saturday for a non-league game against Rogers

Hornet Win Improves League Record to 2-1

With a 12-10 win over Auburn Riverside on Tuesday, The Enumclaw Girls Water Polo Team improved their league record to 2-1.

Senior Bella Davenport scored first for the Hornets, two minutes into the opening period.  The Ravens rallied to take a 3-1 lead at the end of the quarter, and a 6-1 advantage midway through the second quarter.  But Hornet sophomore Hayley Sonneson scored five goals in the last 3:16 of the second quarter, to bring Enumclaw within one of the home team, 7-6, at halftime.

Both teams scored one goal each in the third period, and the Ravens scored two early in the final period, for a three point advantage, 10-7, with 5:49 left in the game.  The Hornets went back to work, holding the Ravens scoreless for the rest of the game, while adding five Hornet goals in the last five minutes, four by Sonneson, and one by Davenport.  Junior Megan Lesmeister had 14 saves in the goal.

The Hornets improve their league record to 2-1, and host Kentridge on Thursday at the Enumclaw Pool.  Game time is 7:30.


Hornets Lose Non-League Contest to Puyallup

Enumclaw's Girls Water Polo Team traveled to Puyallup on Friday for  a non-league game against the Vikings and suffered a narrow 10-8 loss.

Puyallup took off to a 3-0 lead in the first half of the opening quarter, but the Hornets rallied to score two goals in the final 26 seconds of the quarter, to trail by one, 3-2, going into the second quarter.  Enumclaw outscored Puyallup in the second quarter for a 7-6 Enumclaw lead at halftime.  The Vikings caught up with Enumclaw for an 8-8 tie after three quarters, and Puyallup held the Hornets scoreless in the final quarter for the 10-8 final score.

Sophomore Hayley Sonneson scored four for Enumclaw, and Bailey Sexton and Bella Davenport each scored two.

Enumclaw Beats Auburn for 1st Win of 2013

The EHS Girls Water Polo Team traveled to Auburn on Thursday, and came home with a 14-5 win over the Trojans, and the Hornets' first league win of the 2013 season.

The Trojans scored first, and increased their lead to 2-0 with three minutes remaining in the opening period, but the Hornets scored three goals in the final 1:21 of the first quarter (two by Bella Davenport, and one by Bailey Sexton)), to take a 3-2 advantage into the second quarter.

Sexton added two more, and Davenport and Madi Woodall each scored one in the second quarter, for a 7-3 Hornet lead at halftime.  Sexton scored five more in the second half, and Hayley Sonneson added two goals in the final three minutes for the 14-5 final score.

Sexton led all scorers with eight goals, Davenport knocked in three, Sonneson scored two, and Woodall added one.  Goalkeeper Megan Lesmeister had 14 saves.

The Hornets travel to Puyallup on Friday to face the Puyallup Vikings in a non-league contest.

Hornets Lose Season Opener to Mountainview

The Enumclaw High School Girls Water Polo Team lost their season opener on Tuesday, March 12, to the Auburn Mountainview Lions, 18-2.

Savanna Warner was the game's high scorer, with eight goals for the Lions.  Lion Avalon Lanz scored six, Taylor Lavine, two, and Sydney Hedrick and Lindsey Powers each scored one.

For the Hornets, Bailey Sexton and Hayley Sonneson each scored one.

The Hornets face the Auburn Trojans in Auburn on Thursday, and travel to Puyallup to take on the Puyallup Vikings on Friday.

Puget Sound Polo Holding Tryouts for JO Teams

Puget Sound Polo will be holding open tryouts for their 16U and 18U girls water polo teams on Sunday, March 24, at Curtis High School, in University Place, WA.  

Teams will be formed to compete at the 2013 Junior Olympics in Orange County, CA this summer.

Tryouts will consist of time trials, passing and shooting drills, and scrimmaging.

Registration will be at 2:45; tryouts will go from 3:00 to 4:30.

Hornets Prepare for League Play

The Enumclaw High School Girls Water Polo Team finished their second week of practice with a trip to Edgeworks Climbing in Tacoma on Friday, and a pre-season jamboree at Lakes High School in Lakewood on Saturday.

Hornet coaches gave their young squad a break from their hard work in the water with a trip to the climbing gym in Tacoma, where the girls had the opportunity to try some new skills.

On Saturday, the team traveled to Lakewood for the annual Lakes jamboree.  The Hornets went 1-3, losing to Roosevelt 5-10, beating Bellevue 15-0, and losing to Curtis 2-13 and Mercer Island 2-5.

Veterans Bella Davenport and Bailey Sexton scored three and two goals, respectively, in the initial game.  Against Bellevue, Davenport scored three, and Sexton, two, while sophomore Hayley Sonneson added two.  Freshman Anna Davenport led all scorers with five goals, and three more freshmen – Lauren Pratt, Kate Braun, and Grace Sales – scored one goal each.

Against Curtis and Mercer Island, Sexton and Bella Davenport scored one apiece in each game.

This year’s Hornet squad has five returning players – senior Bella Davenport, 2012 All League Honorable Mention; junior Megan Lesmeister, 2012 All League First Team and All State Second Team; and sophomores Bailey Sexton, Hayley Sonneson, and Madi Woodall.  Joining the veterans are freshmen Kate Braun, Sierra Clough, Anna Davenport, Brandi Meneghini, Lauren Pratt, Grace Sales, and Megan Wolgamot.

Coaches Bob Averill and Ken DeMan enter their ninth year with the EHS girls, and are joined on the bench by former Hornet and CWU water polo player Tia Thomasson.

“We’re excited about this team’s potential.  They’re young and enthusiastic, and play well together.  It was great to see so many freshmen (four) scoring at the jamboree; they’re catching on fast, and will keep improving as the season progresses,” said coach Bob Averill.

The Hornets open league play at home against Auburn Mountainview on Tuesday, March 12, and travel to Auburn on Thursday, March 14 to face the Auburn Trojans.
