Enumclaw and Sumner grads compete in Las Vegas tournament Easter weekend
Two Plateau area athletes took part in a collegiate water polo tournament last weekend, April 11 & 12, hosted by the University of Washington at the Las Vegas Municipal Pool.
Elise Averill, a 2005 graduate from Enumclaw High School, and Sarah Henneford, a 2005 graduate from Sumner High School, are finishing their fourth year of play with Western Washington University women’s water polo team. Averill and Henneford both played for their high school teams for four years and were high school team captains during their senior seasons.
Averill is the daughter of Bob Averill of Enumclaw, and Claudia Johns, of Kent, and will graduate in June with a degree in Exercise and Sports Science, specializing in pre-physical therapy. Henneford is the daughter of Dennis and Kathy Henneford, of Sumner, and will graduate in 2010 with a degree in Environmental Science.
The WWU Vikings competed against collegiate teams from the University of Washington, Cal State Chico, University of Arizona, and club teams from Puget Sound Polo, and Las Vegas Masters. The Vikings finished in fifth place, with their lone win a 7-4 victory over the University of Washington.
The Vikings lost 9-5 to Puget Sound Polo. 19-10 to Cal State Chico, and 18-10 to the University of Arizona on Saturday. Sunday, WWU lost to the Las Vegas Masters team 18-8 before beating the Huskies 7-4.
