After starting slow and falling to a 4-0 deficit against the Puyallup Vikings at home, the Enumclaw High School Girls Water Polo Team came back to beat the Vikings 8-7 on a goal from Breanna Flaquinti with one second left in the game.
The Hornets started poorly, and fell behind 4-0 until Kelsey Brazier scored for Enumclaw two minutes into the second quarter. The Hornets were in foul trouble early, committing six exclusion fouls before their first score. Both defenses held tough for the second quarter, and Puyallup held a 4-1 lead at halftime.
Enumclaw roared back in the third period, scoring four goals – three by senior captain Kaitlyn Korsch – and holding the Vikings to a single score.
With the score tied 5-5 entering the final period, the teams traded scores until Korsch put the Hornets ahead 7-6 with 56 seconds remaining. Puyallup took control of the ball and called their final time out with 33 seconds remaining. After passing the ball around, Viking Jordan Brain scored with 13 seconds remaining to tie the game 7-7.
The Hornets called time out to set up the ball in the front court. The Viking defense denied the pass to center, but Breanna Flaquinti got open at the perimeter and scored from seven meters with one second left on the clock for the win.
Enumclaw travels to Sumner on Friday for a league game against Bonney Lake at 3:15, and face the Wilson Rams in Tacoma in a 12:00 game on Saturday.
