Hornets Suffer First Loss; Remain Unbeaten in East Division

The Enumclaw High School Girls Water Polo Team continued their unbeaten ways in league play, with two more league wins last week, but lost their first game of the 2016 season, 18-8 to defending State Champion Gig Harbor on Saturday.

The Hornets opened play this week with a 13-1 victory over the Auburn Trojans at the Enumclaw Aquatic Center. Seven Hornets scored in the win; Brandi Meneghini scored three, Anna Davenport, Grace Rich, Grace Munnell, and Emilie Weyer each scored two. Lauren Pratt and Kate Meneghini scored one goal apiece. Scotty Strickland scored the Trojans' lone goal.

On Thursday the Lady Hornets traveled to Auburn to face Auburn Mountainview, and returned home with an 11-4 win over a physical Lions squad. Grace Rich led all scorers with five goals. Davenport scored three, and Brandi Meneghini, Hannah Simurdak, and Weyer each scored one. For the Lions, Rachel Pankowski scored two goals, and Emily Mallory and Autumn Hildebrand scored one each.

On Saturday the Hornets faced the defending State Champion Gig Harbor Tides at their home pool, where the powerful Tides earned a convincing win over the visiting Hornets, 18-8. Six Hornets scored in the loss, with Davenport and Rich scoring two each, and Munnell, Weyer, Pratt, and Simurdak adding one goal each. Gig Harbor's Alana Ponce scored nine goals, Kenzie Bailey and Lindsey Moon scored two each, and Kelli Craft, Annalise Arroyo, Kirsten Sawyer, Riley Earl, and Shelby Ward scored one each.

The Hornets remain undefeated in league play, at 4-0, with a 4-1 overall record. Enumclaw returns to league play this week, hosting Kentridge on Monday, and Auburn Riverside on Thursday. Both games are at 7:30.
