The Washington Girls High School Water Polo State Championships concluded on Saturday, May 23, with the Gig Harbor Tides claiming their second consecutive State Championship with a 10-3 win over Newport.

Hornets Finish Fourth in State

The Enumclaw High School Girls Water Polo Team wrapped up the 2015 water polo season with a fourth place finish at the Washington Girls High School Water Polo State Championship on Saturday, May 23, at Curtis High School, in University Place, WA.

The Lady Hornets advanced to post-season play by finishing in the top four of the East Division in regular season play. Enumclaw finished the regular season with a 9-1 division record, and a 16-7 overall record; the Hornets clinched the Division Title with a 15-8 win in the tie-breaker game with Auburn Riverside on Tuesday, May 12.

Enumclaw finished second at the Region I Tournament on May 16 at Rogers High School in Puyallup. The Hornets beat Peninsula 15-5 on Friday, May 15, and Wilson 11-8 on Saturday, May 16, before losing in the Regional Championship 18-5 to the Gig Harbor Tides, the defending State Champion and eventual 2015 State Champion.

At State, Enumclaw opened on Thursday, May 21 against Bellevue, and advanced from the opening round with a 7-5 win over the fierce Wolverines. In the semi-final, Newport beat the Hornets 16-1, advancing the Knights to the Championship Game, and dropping the Hornets into the consolation round.

On the final day of the State tournament, Enumclaw rallied from five points behind with less than four minutes left in the game, to beat Mercer Island in overtime, 12-11, and advance to the 3rd place/4th place game against Curtis later that day. In the Hornets’ final game, the exhausted Hornets were overcome by a powerful Curtis team, and lost 18-0.

In addition to the fourth place trophy, the Hornets returned home with some individual honors – senior captain Hayley Sonneson was named to the First Team All-Tournament Team, senior captain Bailey Sexton was named to the Second Team All-Tournament Team, and junior Anna Davenport earned All-Tournament Honorable Mention.

Gig Harbor Tides Win State Championship

Newport & Gig Harbor Ready for the State Championship Game
The Gig Harbor Tides Girls Water Polo Team claimed the 2015 Girls Water Polo Washington State Championship on Saturday, May 23, with a 10-3 win over Newport in the State Tournament Championship Game.

Eight teams earned appearances at the State Tournament, by placing in the top four at their respective Regional Tournaments a week earlier. Gig Harbor, Enumclaw, Auburn Riverside, and Wilson earned berths at State in the Region I Tournament; Newport, Curtis, Bellevue, and Mercer Island qualified for State from Region II.

Championship Game – Newport vs. Gig Harbor

Friday's competition at the Washington Girls High School Water Polo State Championship has been completed, and Saturday's Championship Game is set. The Newport Knights will challenge the defending State Champion Gig Harbor Tides for the 2015 State Championship in the final game of the tournament, at 7:00 p.m. Saturday, at Curtis High School.

The two teams earned their their berths in the championship game with wins in Friday's semi-finals – Newport in a 16-1 win over Enumclaw, and Gig Harbor with a 12-5 win over Curtis.

Saturday's games will begin at 10:00, as Curtis and Wilson vie for a spot in the 3rd place/4th place game. At 11:30 Enumclaw and Mercer Island will play for a spot opposite the earlier winner.  The losing teams from the day's first two games will play for 5th and 6th place at State at 3:00.

Auburn Riverside and Bellevue will square off for the State's 7th and 8th place finish at 1:00, and the 3rd/4th place game is scheduled for 5:00. The Championship Game, Newport vs. Gig Harbor will conclude the tournament, and will start at 7:00.

State Water Polo Tournament Continues Friday

Day one of the Washington Girls High School Water Polo State Championships is in the books, and round two will start up Friday afternoon, at Curtis High School, in University Place.

Thursday's action saw wins by defending State Champion Gig Harbor, Curtis, Newport, and Enumclaw. Four teams lost in the opening round – Auburn Riverside, Mercer Island, Bellevue, and Wilson – and are still vying to finish as high as third place.

Winners of Friday's semi-final games will advance to the State Championship Game, at 7:00 Saturday, May 23. All eight teams will continue play on both Friday and Saturday.


Hornets Win in Opening Round at State

The EHS Girls Water Polo Team beat Bellevue 7-5 in the opening round at the Washington State Girls High School Water Polo Tournament, at Curtis High School, on Thursday, May 21.

The win advances the Hornets into one of the State Tournament semi-final games, where they will face Newport at 8:00 Friday night.

Thursday's game started as a defensive battle; both teams struggled to generate much offense in the opening quarter. The score was knotted at 0-0 for more than six minutes of play, when Bellevue's Lisa Courtney scored with 23 seconds remaining in the first period.

Anna Davenport scored two, and Bailey Sexton scored one in the second quarter, and the Hornets held a 3-1 lead at halftime. The two teams traded goals in the third period, with two each, until Hayley Sonneson scored at the end of the period on a Hornet power play, to give Enumclaw a 6-3 advantage going into the final frame.

Both teams battled to the end, drawing five exclusion fouls in the fourth quarter. Bellevue scored two, but Enumclaw added one more, and held on for the 7-5 win.

Senior captain Hayley Sonneson, and junior Anna Davenport scored three goals each for Enumclaw. Senior captain Bailey Sexton scored one. Bellevue's scoring was evenly distributed with Lisa Courtney, Maggie Ugelstad, Morgan Baker, Carly Tudor, and Alexis Taber each scoring a goal.

The Hornets face Newport Friday at 8:00. Bellevue will play Wilson at 5:00.

Six Hornets Named to All-Division Teams

Six members of the Enumclaw High School Girls Water Polo Team have been named to All-Division Teams for the 2015 season.

Senior captains Hayley Sonneson and Bailey Sexton, along with junior Anna Davenport, were named to the East Division's First Team All-Division Team.

Juniors Grace Sales and Hannah Simurdak were awarded spots on the Second Team All-Division Team, and junior goalkeeper Lauren Pratt earned Honorable Mention honors.

Enumclaw enters State Tournament play on Thursday as the East Division Champions, and the second place team from Region I. The Hornets face Bellevue in the opening round at State, Thursday at 6:30, at Curtis High School in University Place, WA.

Girls Water Polo All-Division Teams Posted


Washington State Tournament Starts Thursday

The Washington State Girls High School Water Polo Tournament opens play this Thursday, May 21 at Curtis High School, and will conclude with the State Championship game on Saturday, May 23, at 7:00.

Eight teams have qualified for the tournament, advancing to State through the league's new Regional Tournament format. Gig Harbor finished Regional Tournament action as the Region I Champion, with an 18-5 win over Enumclaw in the Regional Championship. Newport edged Curtis 5-4 in the Region II Championship, to advance to State as the Region II Champion.

All eight teams will play one game on Thursday, one game on Friday, and at least one game on Saturday. Thursday's opening round of play begins at 3:30, when Auburn Riverside faces Curtis. At 5:00 Gig Harbor will defend their 2014 State Title against Mercer Island; Bellevue and Enumclaw play at 6:30. Opening round play will conclude at 8:00 with Wilson vs. Newport.

Play on Friday will open at 3:30 with the two semi-final games at 6:30 and 8:00. On Saturday play starts at 10:00, with the State Championship Game closing the tournament at 7:00.

All games will be at Curtis High School, 8425 40th St W, University Place, WA.

Regional Tournaments Completed – On to State!

The Washington State Regional Tournaments were completed on Saturday night, and eight teams have qualified for the State Girls Water Polo Tournament. The State Tournament will be held next week, May 21-23, at Curtis High School, in University Place, WA.

Four teams advance from Region I – Gig Harbor, Enumclaw, Auburn Riverside, and Wilson. From Region II, Newport, Curtis, Bellevue, and Mercer Island will advance to State.

Hornets Advance to State Tournament

Enumclaw High School Girls Water Polo Team finished second at this weekend's Regional Tournament at Rogers High School to earn a berth at the State Tournament, held May 21-23 at Curtis High School, in University Place, WA.

The Hornets entered the Regional Tournament as the East Division Champion.

Enumclaw beat Peninsula in their opening game of the tournament on Friday, 15-5, to advance to Saturday's semi-final game against Wilson.

Wilson got a fast start in the semi-final, taking a 3-0 lead in the game's first two minutes. The Hornet defense tightened, and Enumclaw trailed 4-1 after the first quarter, and 5-3 at halftime. In the third frame, Enumclaw outscored the Rams 3-1, for a 6-6 tie going into the game's final period, and the Hornets scored five goals in the final quarter for an 11-6 win.

The semi-final win advanced Enumclaw into the Regional Championship, and an automatic berth at next weekend's State Tournament. In the Regional Championship game, defending State Champion Gig Harbor subdued the Enumclaw squad 18-5.

State Tournament play for the Hornets opens next Thursday, when Enumclaw faces Bellevue, the third seed from Region II, at 6:30. All State Tournament games will take place at Curtis High School, 8425 40th St W, University Place, WA. All teams in the tournament will play one game on Thursday, one on Friday, and at least one game on Saturday.

The first day of Regional Tournament play is completed in Washington's Girls High School Water Polo League; six teams from each division continue to Saturday's competition.Auburn Mountainview, Peninsula, Sumner, and Inglemoor all had their seasons end Friday.

The Hornets beat Peninsula at 6:45 on Friday, and will continue play on Saturday, facing Wilson at 11:30 on Saturday in one of the Regional Semi-Final Games.

Post-Season Play Starts This Weekend

The Washington State Girls High School Water Polo Season heads into the post-season this weekend, with Regional Tournaments on Friday and Saturday, and concludes with next weekend's State Tournament.

The Enumclaw Hornets enter the Region I Tournament as the #1 seed from the East Division, and will face the #4 seed from the West, Peninsula, at 6:45 Friday, at Rogers High School in Puyallup.

Divisional Results, Regional Seedings

The Washington State Girls Water Polo League completed league play on Tuesday, May 12, and seeding for this weekend's Regional Tournaments has been determined. The top four teams in each division have qualified for Regional Tournaments.

The East and West Divisions will compete in the Region I Tournament on Friday and Saturday, at Rogers High School in Puyallup. The Region II Tournament will take place at Curtis High School, in University Place on those same days, pitting the North and South Divisions against each other.

The top four teams from each Regional Tournament will advance to the State Tournament, held May 21-23 at Curtis High School.





Schedule Changes, Race for the Post-Season

As the girls water polo season wraps up league play this week, the Enumclaw High School Girls Water Polo Team is facing several last-minute schedule changes as they prepare for the post-season.

The Thursday, May 7 game with Bellevue has been canceled.

If Auburn Riverside beats Auburn on Thursday, and the Hornets beat Tahoma on Saturday, the Hornets and Ravens will end the season tied for first place in the East Division. In that case, the two teams will play a playoff game to determine seeding into the Regional Tournament.

This year there are several teams that may have to play a tiebreaker game to determine Regional seeding. Listed below are some of the possible games. Several league games remain in the North Division; several possible ties could occur.

The Hornets last home game, a non-league game vs. Puyallup, has been re-scheduled to Wednesday, May 13, due to the Hornets’ possible seeding game on Tuesday. Wednesday’s game will also be the Hornets’ Senior Night – where the Hornets celebrate seniors Bailey Sexton, Hayley Sonneson, and Madi Woodall.

The Hornets open Regional play on Friday, May 15, at Rogers High School in Puyallup. Game time and opponent will be determined by the team’s final seeding.

Final Week of League Play

The Washington State Girls High School Water Polo Season enters the final week of league competition this week, with 32 games scheduled over the week; 26 of them are league contests.

The Hornets play four games this week – three league games, one non-league. The league games are at Auburn on Tuesday at 5:30, at home vs. Auburn Mountainview at 8:30 on Wednesday, and Saturday vs. Tahoma at 6:00 at the Covington Pool. Enumclaw also hosts Bellevue at 7:30 on Thursday.

Updated Girls Water Polo Standings, May 1

Listed below are the current Washington State High School Girls Water Polo standings, as posted by the league on May 1. The teams have one remaining week of league play.

The top four teams in each division at the end of the regular season will advance to a Regional Tournament. The Region I Tournament will pit the top four teams from the East Division against the top four teams from the West, at Puyallup's Rogers High School, on May 15th and 16th. The Region II Tournament will take place at the same time, at Curtis High School in University Place, where the North Division will face the South Division.

In case of a tie where a team is eliminated from the post season or there is an advantage gained by the higher seed, the tie will be broken with a regulation length contest played at a neutral site.

The top four teams from each Regional Tournament will advance to the State Tournament, held May 21-23 at Curtis High School.
