Hornets Open Season at Jamboree

The Enumclaw High School Girls Water Polo Team opened their 2014 season with two losses and a win at the Curtis Jamboree on Saturday, March 15.

The Hornets lost to defending State Champion Curtis, 11-3, in the opening game of the jamboree, and lost to Wilson, 9-6, in the Hornets’ second game. The Hornets beat Bellevue, 6-0, in Enumclaw’s last game of the jamboree; backup goalkeeper Lauren Pratt registered the shutout.

Coaches Bob Averill and Ken DeMan are returning for their tenth year coaching the EHS Girls Water Polo Team.  Joining Averill and DeMan is Tia Hellman, a 2008 graduate of EHS, and a recent CWU graduate, who played water polo at both schools.

The Hornets are led by captains Megan Lesmeister, Hayley Sonneson, and Bailey Sexton. Senior Megan Lesmeister has earned All League honors each of the past three years, and All State honors for two of those years.  She also has competed in USA Water Polo’s Junior Olympics.  Juniors Sonneson and Sexton both were named to All League teams as sophomores.

Also returning for the Hornets are junior Madi Woodall, and sophomores Anna Davenport, Lauren Pratt, Grace Sales, Brandi Meneghini, Sierra Clough, and Megan Wolgamot. Joining the Hornets for their first year are sophomore Hannah Smurdak and freshman Emilie Weyer.

The Hornets open their regular season on Wednesday, March 19 against the Puyallup Vikings at Puyallup High School. Game time is 4:30 p.m.

Puget Sound Polo Offers Brenda Villa Clinic

Puget Sound Polo will host four-time Olympian Brenda Villa in a girls water polo clinic on Saturday, March 8 at Curtis High School, in University Place, WA.  The clinic will run from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and cost $125 per athlete.

Brenda Villa (born April 18, 1980) is an accomplished American water polo player. She is the most decorated athlete in the world of women’s water polo, and was named Female Water Polo Player of the Decade for 2000-2009 by the FINA Aquatics World Magazine.

Auburn Pool Hosts Olympian Genai Kerr

The Auburn School District water polo teams will host Olympian Genai Kerr as he puts on a Nike 5 Meter Water Polo Camp on March 1 & 2, 2014.

Genai Kerr is a USA Water Polo Olympian, coach, mentor, and true ambassador of the sport.  Genai was a member of the United States Men's National Water Polo Team for 12 years and played in the 2004 Athens Olympics, 2003 & 2007 Pan American Gold Medal games, and multiple World Championships.  He is one of the only athletes in history to compete internationally as a goalie and as a field player.  Most recently he was named MVP of the 2012 US Open after he helped Newport Water Polo Foundation win the national championship.  Genai has coached at every level, from age group to Division 1 college programs. 

The camp will cost $100, and will run from 2:30-6:00 on Saturday, March 1, and 9:00-4:00 on Sunday, March 2.  It will take place at the Auburn School District Pool, 516 4th street NE, Auburn, WA.  For more information, look online at 5meter.com/Seattle, or contact Enumclaw coach Bob Averill at bobaverill@earthlink.net.

A handy reference for new water polo players, and their parents, A Spectator's Guide to Water Polo, is available online here.  The guide was written by Pete Pappas, a water polo parent who became an official after his son graduated from high school.  It is easy to read, and helps make sense of a game that can be difficult to understand.

Boys Water Polo Starts Monday

Enumclaw High School's Boys Water Polo Team begins practices on Monday, August 26 at the Enumclaw Pool.  Monday through Thursday's practices will be held from 8:00 to 9:30 pm.  Friday practices will be from 1:15 to 2:30 in the small gym, and 3:30 to 5:00 at the pool. Saturday practices will be held from 7:00 to 8:00 am.

Schedules and additional information will be distributed at Monday's practice, and posted on the web site later in the week.
