Hornets Lose to Mountainview

The Enumclaw High School Girls Water Polo Team lost to the Auburn Mountainview Lions, 16-13, on Thursday, April 14, in a game that may determine the league champions. As a result of Thursday's game, Mountainview is in first place in the East Division with a 5-1 record, and Enumclaw is in second, with a 4-2 record. Both teams have played each other twice, and are scheduled to play a second game with each remaining league team before the end of the regular season.

The Hornets started off well, with goals by Hannah Kinniburgh, and Annie Birklid in the opening two minutes of play. Mountainview's Amanda Nuttall put the Lions on the board with 4:22 left in the first period, but Ali Ballard responded with a Hornet goal 15 seconds later. The two teams exchanged goals through the quarter, for a 5-4 Enumclaw advantage after one quarter.

Nuttall led the Lions in scoring with five goals through the next two periods to help put Mountainview ahead 13-8 after three quarters. The Hornets put together a rally in the final quarter, outscoring the Lions 5-3, but came up short, for the 16-13 final score.

Kelsey Sonneson led Enumclaw's scoring, with five goals. Ali Ballard and Annie Birklid scored three each, and Erin Stucker and Hannah Kinniburgh each scored a goal.

The Hornets travel to Puyallup on Friday to take on the Puyallup Vikings on a non-league, but competitive, rivalry game. Friday's game is also Puyallup's annual Pink & White game, raising funds and awareness for a breast cancer cure. Teams will wear pink and white, and play with pink game balls; admission fees will be contributed to the Komen fund for the cure. Game time is 7:30.
