Hornets Winless in First Day of Tournament

The Enumclaw High School Boys Water Polo Team finished the first day of the 2009 Auburn School District Water Polo Tournament without a win, tying Auburn Mountainview 5-5, and falling to Auburn 7-2.

In Friday's opening game, against Auburn Mountainview, the Hornets fell behind 3-0 in the first half before Garrett Hall put Enumclaw on the board with a goal almost three minutes into the second quarter. Both teams scored once more in the final two minutes of the quarter before taking the halftime break with the Hornets down 4-2.

The teams went scoreless for over three minutes into the second half, when Enumclaw earned a power play on a Mountainview exclusion foul. After taking a timeout, the Hornets scored during their six-on-five opportunity with a goal by Bennon VanHoof to bring the Hornets within one. Zach Petersen tied the score at 4-4 with a goal with 33 seconds left in the third period.

Enumclaw went up 5-4 20 seconds in to the final quarter on a Travis Culp goal, but the Lions tied the score at five with 1:52 left in the game. Both teams missed on scoring opportunities in the final minute to settle for the 5-5 stalemate.

In the Hornets' second game, Enumclaw scored once in the first period, on a goal by Garrett Hall, and once in the second, by Zach Petersen, to take a 2-0 lead over the Auburn Trojans into the second half.

But the Trojans roared back, holding Enumclaw scoreless in the second half, while scoring seven goals of their own, for the final 7-2 score.

Saturday the Hornets will face teams from Lakes High School, Auburn Riverside, Puyallup, and Peninsula. Enumclaw resumes league action on Tuesday with a league game against Peninsula at the Enumclaw Aquatic Center at 4:30
