The Enumclaw High School Girls Water Polo Team hosted their last home game of the season on Wednesday, and celebrated senior Bella Davenport's last home game as a Hornet with an 8-6 win over the Puyallup Vikings. Davenport led all scorers with four goals.
Davenport and the Hornets will continue play next week, as they advance to the State tournament, held May 15-18 at Lakes High School in Lakewood, and Curtis High School, in University Place.
Wednesday's game featured two strong defenses – the Hornets held Puyallup scoreless for over 10 minutes, and the Vikings frustrated Enumclaw into six turnovers in the opening period. The Hornets managed to score twice in the first quarter, on goals by Hayley Sonneson and Bella Davenport for a 2-0 Hornet lead. Both teams scored a single goal in the second quarter; one by Viking Kirtsin Powers, and one by Enumclaw's Bella Davenport.
Little sister Anna Davenport scored the first goal of the third quarter for the Hornets, and Hayley Sonneson scored again in the final minute of the quarter. Vikings Amy Kiuchi and Natalie Beck also scored, for a 5-3 Enumclaw advantage going into the final frame.
The teams traded goals through the final quarter, with each team scoring three, for the final 8-6 Hornet win.
Bella Davenport scored four for Enumclaw; Hayley Sonneson scored three, and Anna Davenport scored one. Goalkeeper Megan Lesmeister, back from her trip to the Junior Olympics Qualifier in Salem, OR, recorded ten saves and one assist.
For Puyallup, Amy Kiuchi scored two, and Nicole Berge, Kirstin Powers, Natalie Beck, and Halley Allem each scored one.
The Hornets finished their regular season with a 7-3 league record, and 11-9 overall record. Details for the State tournament will be posted next Monday night.
