The Enumclaw High School Girls Water Polo Team traveled to Lakewood on Monday night to face perennial powerhouse Curtis; the Hornets lost a close one, 8-6.
Enumclaw took the lead early, 91 seconds into the game, on a goal by senior Erin Stucker, but the home team Vikings rallied to score three in the first period, to take a 3-1 advantage into the second quarter. The Hornets earned two goals from Kelsey Sonneson and one from Ali Ballard, while holding Curtis to a single score in the second quarter, to tie the game 4-4 at halftime.
Annie Birklid scored on a two meter backhand to keep the score tied 5-5 after the third period, but the Vikings added three, while holding Enumclaw to a lone Katie Larrea goal in the final quarter, for the final 8-6 score. Freshman goalkeeper Megan Lesmeister had 12 saves in her first varsity action.
The Lady Hornets begin league play on Tuesday, March 15, when they host Auburn Mountainview in a 4:30 game at the Enumclaw Aquatic Center.
