The Enumclaw High School Girls Water Polo Team improved their season record to 3-1 on Thursday. April 1 by beating Auburn Mountainview 9-8 in an evening game at the Auburn pool.
The Hornets took the lead early, eight seconds into the game, on a fast break goal by junior Ali Ballard. Senior Rachel Deonigi scored on Enumclaw’s next possession and the Hornet offense gained a 5-0 lead before the end of the first period.
The Lions chipped away at the Hornet lead, scoring three goals in the second quarter, one in the third, and four in the final period, including three in the final two minutes, to keep the game close.
Enumclaw scoring was led by Rachel Deonigi, Ali Ballard, and Alina Van Ruff, with two goals each. Lindsay Bowden, Erin Stucker, and Kelsey Sonneson added a goal each for the Hornets.
Senior goalkeeper Shaye Hogerhuis had 12 saves, including stopping three of four five-meter penalty shots. Several other players added to the defensive effort, with nine steals by Bowden, five by Stucker, and four each by Van Ruff and Sonneson.
