The Enumclaw Hornets beat the Auburn Trojans 9-8, in the fourth overtime period of their contest on Thursday, September 30.
Auburn started strong, scoring three goals in the first quarter, while holding the Enumclaw squad scoreless. The Hornets got on the board in the second quarter, on goals by Travis Culp and Garrett Hall, but the Trojans kept marching, scoring three in the period, for a 6-2 Auburn advantage at halftime.
Enumclaw went on a scoring spree in the third period, with goals by Hall, Bennon VanHoof, and Thomas Petersen, and tied the game at 6-6 early in the fourth quarter on a Hall goal. Auburn responded with a goal with four minutes left in regulation, but VanHoof tied it up at 7-7 with 54 seconds left.
Both teams were scoreless in the first three-minute overtime, and the two teams traded goals in the second overtime, forcing the game into sudden death overtime. Again, the two teams were shut out in the first sudden death period; Hall scored on a lob over the Trojan goalkeeper 92 seconds into the fourth overtime period for the win.
Scoring for Enumclaw were Hall, with four goals, VanHoof with two, and Travis Culp and Thomas Petersen with one goal apiece. On defense, the Hornets tallied 15 steals, and goalkeeper Josh Musick gathered 37 saves. The game had 38 minutes and 32 seconds of playing time, and lasted nearly 90 minutes.
The win improves the Hornets league record to 4-1, and their season record to 5-2. The Hornets' JV squad plays in Auburn again on Saturday, in Auburn Riverside's JV tournament. The Enumclaw varsity will host Auburn Riverside in a league game on Tuesday, October 5, at 4:30.
