The EHS Boys Water Polo Team suffered their first league loss on Thursday, losing to Auburn Mountainview 15-13 at the Enumclaw Aquatic Center.
Both teams entered the game undefeated in league play. Senior Bryce VanHoof put the Hornets on the board first, scoring 82 seconds into the game. The two teams traded goals through most of the opening period, but Mountainview's Owen Lampert scored on two penalty shots in the last two minutes of the quarter to give the Lions a 6-4 advantage after one quarter of play.
Both teams added four goals in the second quarter, and Mountainview maintained their two goal lead, 10-8 at halftime. The teams played evenly again in the third quarter, with both teams scoring two, and the Lions had a 12-10 lead going into the final period. Hornet captains Bryce VanHoof and Jack Pugh each scored early in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 12 with four minutes left in the game, but the Lions' Tyler Arnold and Jonah Kathlean each scored in next two minutes to give Mountainview a 14-12 lead with slightly more than two minutes left. Freshman Ethan Horan scored with 1:59 left to bring the Hornets within a goal, but Lampert scored two possessions later for the final 15-13 result.
VanHoof led the Hornet scoring with nine goals; Pugh scored three and Horan added one. Enumclaw's senior goalkeeper Austin Kaehn had 10 saves and seven steals.
For Auburn Mountainview, Lampert scored seven goals, Arnold and Kathlean scored four each.
The Hornets continue league play on Monday, hosting Auburn Riverside at 7:30. Enumclaw is now 4-1 in league play, and 9-4 overall.
