Hornets Close Month Undefeated in League Play

The Enumclaw High School Girls Water Polo Team finished play for the month of March on Thursday, with an 18-5 win over Auburn Riverside, and an unblemished 6-0 record in league play.

After a Saturday non-league loss to defending State Champion Gig Harbor, the Hornets bounced back to their winning ways on Monday with a 12-4 win over league opponent Kentridge, at the Enumclaw Aquatic Center.

Against the Chargers, the Hornets rattled off four goals in the first two and a half minutes. Kentridge added two in the opening quarter, but Enumclaw held them scoreless in the second period, and held a 7-2 halftime lead. In the third quarter, Grace Rich, Anna Davenport, Hannah Simurdak, and Lindsay Harms each scored before Kentridge added their third goal of the game, and Kate Meneghini scored with three seconds remaining in the quarter. The Hornets led 11-3 going into the final period; each team scored pone in the final stanza.

Eight Hornets scored in the win. Anna Davenport, Emilie Weyer, Hannah Simurdak, and Grace Rich scored two goals each. Grace Munnell, Grace Sales, Lindsay Harms, and Kate Meneghini each scored one.

For Kentridge, Haley Halversen scored two, and Rachel Bige and Michaela Childress each scored one.

Enumclaw continued winning on Thursday with an 18-5 win over league rival Auburn Riverside. The Hornets took control quickly, and used the opportunity to give their first-year players some varsity minutes; all 16 eligible Hornets got playing time, and nine scored. Rich scored five, and Davenport three. Simurdak, Weyer, and Munnell each scored two, and Brandi Meneghini, Kate Meneghini, Harms, and Morgan Hall scored one goal each.

All of the varsity squad has scored in the Hornets' short seven-game season, including Enumclaw's two goalkeepers - senior Lauren Pratt and sophomore Morgan Hall.

The Hornets have a break in league action until after Spring Break. Next week the Hornets host Puyallup on Thursday before traveling to Puyallup's Rogers High School for the Emerald Ridge Invitational on April 8 and 9.



Rain City Spring Splash Tournament at KCAC

Rain City Water Polo will host their Spring Splash Tournament at the King County Aquatic Center (KCAC) this weekend, in Federal Way.

The tournament is a USA Water Polo sanctioned event, and will include boys and girls club teams from Washington, Oregon, and California, and some Seattle area girls high school teams.

Competition starts at 6:00 pm Friday, April 1, and runs through Sunday, April 3, with the last game of the tournament scheduled for 4:10 pm Sunday.


Regular Season Enters Week Three

Girls high school water polo season enters the third week of competition in Washington State on Monday.

League competition continues, and the week ends with Rain City Water Polo hosting an invitational tournament at King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.

Hornets Suffer First Loss; Remain Unbeaten in East Division

The Enumclaw High School Girls Water Polo Team continued their unbeaten ways in league play, with two more league wins last week, but lost their first game of the 2016 season, 18-8 to defending State Champion Gig Harbor on Saturday.

The Hornets opened play this week with a 13-1 victory over the Auburn Trojans at the Enumclaw Aquatic Center. Seven Hornets scored in the win; Brandi Meneghini scored three, Anna Davenport, Grace Rich, Grace Munnell, and Emilie Weyer each scored two. Lauren Pratt and Kate Meneghini scored one goal apiece. Scotty Strickland scored the Trojans' lone goal.

On Thursday the Lady Hornets traveled to Auburn to face Auburn Mountainview, and returned home with an 11-4 win over a physical Lions squad. Grace Rich led all scorers with five goals. Davenport scored three, and Brandi Meneghini, Hannah Simurdak, and Weyer each scored one. For the Lions, Rachel Pankowski scored two goals, and Emily Mallory and Autumn Hildebrand scored one each.

On Saturday the Hornets faced the defending State Champion Gig Harbor Tides at their home pool, where the powerful Tides earned a convincing win over the visiting Hornets, 18-8. Six Hornets scored in the loss, with Davenport and Rich scoring two each, and Munnell, Weyer, Pratt, and Simurdak adding one goal each. Gig Harbor's Alana Ponce scored nine goals, Kenzie Bailey and Lindsey Moon scored two each, and Kelli Craft, Annalise Arroyo, Kirsten Sawyer, Riley Earl, and Shelby Ward scored one each.

The Hornets remain undefeated in league play, at 4-0, with a 4-1 overall record. Enumclaw returns to league play this week, hosting Kentridge on Monday, and Auburn Riverside on Thursday. Both games are at 7:30.

Hornets Win Two in First Week of Play

The Enumclaw High School Girls Water Polo Team won two games in their first week of competition, beating Auburn Riverside on Tuesday and Tahoma on Thursday.

The Hornets beat a short-handed Auburn Riverside team 15-3 on Tuesday at the Auburn School District Pool. The Ravens had several team members who still hadn't had enough practices to be eligible for Tuesday's game, and only had seven players available against Enumclaw.  Seven Hornets scored in the win. Anna Davenport, Grace Rich, and Emilie Weyer each scored three,  Morgan Hall and Brandi Meneghini scored two each, and Hannah Simurdak and Kate Meneghjini scored one apiece.

Grace Dorn scored two, and Katie Councilman added one for the Ravens.

On Thursday Enumclaw hosted a much improved Tahoma Bears team, and came away with an 8-2 win.for the second league win of the season. Grace Munnell led all scorers, with four goals. Rich added two, and Davenport and Brandi Meneghini scored a goal each.

For Tahoma, Lindsey Hanger and Nicole McCarthy each scored.

The Hornets continue league play this week, hosting Auburn on Tuesday, and traveling to Auburn on Thursday to face the Auburn Mountainview Lions. On Saturday Enumclaw travels to Gig Harbor for a non-league game against the four-time defending State Champion Tides, at 2:00.

Hornets Open Regular Season Play on Tuesday

The 2016 Enumclaw Hornets Open Play on Tuesday
After wrapping up two weeks of practice with a jamboree at Curtis High School on Saturday, the 2016 Enumclaw High School Girls Water Polo Team opens regular season competition this week.

The Hornets travel to the Auburn High School Pool for a 7:30 game against Auburn Riverside on Tuesday, and host the Tahoma Bears on Thursday at 7:30 at the Enumclaw Aquatic Center. Both are league games.

The Hornets return this season with 12 veterans from last year’s league champion team that finished the season claiming fourth place at the Washington State Championship Tournament.

Graduating from last year’s squad were All-State Award winners Bailey Sexton and Hayley Sonneson, and four-year veteran Madi Woodall.

Returning veterans for the Hornets this season are seniors Anna Davenport, Brandi Meneghini, Lauren Pratt, Grace Sales, and Hannah Simurdak. Junior Emilie Weyer also returns to help defend the Hornets’ league title, along with sophomores Madison Ely, Morgan Hall, Lindsay Harms, Kate Meneghini, Grace Munnell, and Grace Rich.

Davenport, Sales, Simurdak, and Pratt all earned All-League honors last year; Davenport also earned All-State Honorable Mention recognition.

Joining the Hornets for their first year are juniors Jordan Lawson and Caitlyn Schuler, sophomore Bryonna Harris, and freshmen Kenzie Invie-Johnson and Tessa Vallison.

2016 will mark the 18th season of girls water polo at Enumclaw High School. Coach Bob Averill returns for his 12th year coaching the girls water polo program; Coach Ken DeMan is coaching the girls for his 11th season. The Hornets have qualified for the State Tournament for the past 11 years, advancing as high as the semifinal round twice. During that time, the Hornets record has been 167-84.
