Hornets Return to Play Next Week

After a break from competition this week due to league scheduling problems, the EHS Boys Water Polo Team will return to competition next week, facing East Division leader Auburn Riverside on Tuesday, and traveling to Tacoma on Thursday for a rematch against division rival Wilson.

The Hornets have not faced Auburn Riverside yet this year, and lost to Wilson in an offensive shootout, 20-16, earlier in the season.

On Saturday, the JV Hornets will travel to Auburn for a JV tournament, where they'll face JV squads from Curtis, Bellevue, and Mercer Island.

The Hornets are currently 1-2 in league play, and 4-6 overall, and are in fourth place in the East Division.

Newport Ranked Number One

The 2011 Washington State High School Water Polo rankings are out, with Newport ranked number one this week.

Enumclaw finished number seven in the 2010 rankings behind Mercer Island, Curtis, Rogers, Newport, Roosevelt, and Bellevue.

In this week's rankings, Auburn Mountainview is ranked 10th. The Washington State High School Water Polo rankings web site has a poll to determine which team deserves to be ranked in the top 10. Please log on and vote for Enumclaw at http://washh2opolorankings.blogspot.com/.

Stadium, Auburn Games Canceled

Tuesday's water polo game against Stadium, and Thursday's against Auburn have been canceled.

The Stadium game is canceled because they have not met their minimum practice requirement. We hope to re-schedule our game with them. Auburn is not fielding a team this year, so both of our games against Auburn have been canceled.

Auburn JV Tournament Schedule Posted

Auburn Riverside coach Mike Van Eaton has posted the schedule for October 8th's JV water polo tournament at Auburn High School. The EHS water polo team will play three games – one each against Curtis, Bellevue, and Mercer Island.

Enumclaw Finishes Auburn Tournament with Two Wins on Saturday

The Enumclaw High School Boys Water Polo Team finished the Auburn tournament with two wins on Saturday, beating Emerald Ridge 11-4 in the first game of the day, and beating Peninsula 17-9 in the Hornets' final game of the tournament.

In Saturday's opening game, the Hornets took a 4-0 lead in the first quarter, with three goals by Bennon VanHoof, and one by Mason Culp. VanHoof kept scoring in the second quarter, adding three goals, while Emerald Ridge slipped one goal past Hornet freshman goalkeeper Austin Kaehn. Both teams scored twice in the third period, with Will Cooper and Shay Larsen scoring for the Hornets. Larsen and Carson Lanphere scored for Enumclaw in the final period.

In Enumclaw's final game on Saturday, Peninsula stayed even with the Hornets in the first quarter, managing a 4-4 tie. Enumclaw outscored the Seahawks 5-2 in the second quarter, but Peninsula played the Hornets even in the third, with both teams scoring three. The Hornets scored five in the final period, and held Peninsula scoreless, for the 17-9 win.

Bennon VanHoof led the Hornets in scoring against Peninsula, with eight goals. Gabe Sales scored three for Enumclaw, and Thomas Petersen, Riley Sexton, Will Cooper, Mason Culp, Carson Lanphere, and Shay Larsen each scored one.

Hornets Play Early Games Saturday

The EHS Boys Water Polo Team lost both games on Friday at Auburn's Water Polo Tournament, to Rogers and Bainbridge Island. The Hornets will play two more games on Saturday, at 8:00 and 10:15.

Saturday's 8:00 a.m. game will be against Emerald Ridge; the Hornets second game will be against the loser of the bracket containing Auburn Riverside, Peninsula, and Lakes.

On the Hornets first game on Friday, against Rogers, the two teams played even in the first period, ending the quarter with a 3-3 tie. But the Rams scored six goals in the second quarter, to pull ahead of the Hornets, with a 9-5 lead at halftime. Rogers outscored the Hornets 4-2 in the third quarter, but Enumclaw closed the gap in the final quarter, scoring two while holding the Rams scoreless.

Bennon VanHoof led Enumclaw's scoring, with five goals. Thomas Petersen scored two, and Mason Culp and Shay Larsen each added one.

In Enumclaw's second game of the day, the Hornets lost to Bainbridge Island 13-5. The Hornets stayed close in the first half, trailing 3-2 after one quarter, and 5-3 at halftime. The Spartans outscored the Hornets 3-2 in the third period, but ran away with the game in the final period, scoring five goals and holding the Hornets scoreless.

Bennon VanHoof led the Hornets in scoring, with three goals. Gabe Sales and Mason Culp each added one.

Auburn Water Polo Tournament This Weekend


The Enumclaw Water Polo Team will travel to Auburn this weekend to take part in the Annual Auburn Water Polo Tournament.

Nine teams will compete in the tournament, including Auburn Mountainview, Auburn Riverside, Bainbridge Island, Emerald Ridge, Enumclaw, Lakes, Peninsula, Puyallup, and Rogers. The tournament will start at 3:30 on Friday, and conclude with the championship game at 4:15 on Saturday.

The Hornets are scheduled to play Rogers at 5:30 on Friday, and Bainbridge Island at 6:50 on Friday. Saturday's games will be determined by Friday's results.

Hornets Beat Kentridge 13-10

The Enumclaw Boys Water Polo Team traveled to Covington on Thursday to face the Kentridge Chargers, and earned their first league win of the season with a 13-10 victory.


Kentridge scored in the first minute, on a goal by Mitch Halbert, but Enumclaw’s Bennon VanHoof tied the game 30 seconds later, and freshman Quinn Warner scored on the Hornets’ next possession to give the visitors the lead. Will Cooper scored on the next Enumclaw possession, and the Hornets held a 3-2 lead at the end of the first quarter.


VanHoof took over the game in the second quarter, scoring three, and the Hornets held a 6-5 advantage at halftime. Kentridge tied the game on the first play of the third period, but VanHoof, Cooper, and Brandon Butler each added a goal, to hold the Enumclaw advantage, with a 9-7 lead after three quarters.


VanHoof added another three in the final period, and Gabe Sales added one, and the Hornets held on for the 13-10 win.


The Hornets now hold a 2-2 season record, and a 1-1 league record, and continue league play on Tuesday against Auburn Mountainview.

Entertainment Book Fundraiser

The Enumclaw High School Boys Water Polo Team is selling the South Puget Sound Area Edition Entertainment Books to raise funds for the team's tournament in Oregon and pool expenses. The books sell for $25, and offer over $17,000 in savings.

Hornets Lose League Opener 20-16

The Enumclaw High School Boys Water Polo Team lost the first league game of the season on Tuesday night, when the Hornets hosted the Wilson Rams in a night game at the Enumclaw Aquatic Center.

The Hornets scored first, but the two teams exchanged goals through the opening quarter, finishing the first seven minutes with a 5-5 tie. The visiting Rams outscored the Hornets in the second period, taking a 9-6 advantage into the halftime break.

Both teams played even if the third quarter, with both squads scoring five, and the Rams took a 14-11 lead into the final quarter. In the fourth period, the Rams kept scoring, outscoring the Hornets 6-5, for the final 20-16 outcome.

The Hornet scoring was led by Bennon VanHoof's nine goals, but Enumclaw got help from five other scorers, including Carson Lanphere and Mason Culp with two goals each, and Thomas Petersen, Riley Sexton, and Bryce VanHoof with one goal apiece.

The Hornets continue league play on Thursday, against the Kentridge Chargers, at the Covington Aquatic Center, in a 9:00 p.m. game.

Hornet Parent Meeting on Monday

The EHS Boys Water Polo Team parent meeting has been changed to Monday, September 12, in the picnic area behind the Enumclaw pool, at 7:00 p.m. The meeting date was changed because of the delay in re-opening the Enumclaw Pool after maintenance.

Enumclaw Wins Three, Loses One in Jamboree

The EHS Boys Water Polo Team won three games, and lost one, at Saturday's water polo jamboree, held at Tacoma's Wilson High School.

The Hornets opened with a 10-2 win over Rogers in their first contest, and beat Peninsula 10-8 in their second. Enumclaw lost 8-5 to defending State champion Curtis in the Hornets' third game, but finished with a 12-6 win over Lakes in their final game.

The Hornets open 2011 league play on Tuesday, when they host the Wilson Rams in a 7:30 p.m. game at the Enumclaw Aquatic Center.

Rogers Beats Enumclaw in Non-League Game

The EHS Boys Water Polo Team tied their record at 1-1 with a Friday afternoon loss to Rogers, 17-11.

Rogers dominated the game early, taking an 8-0 lead in the opening period, but the Hornets fought back in the second half, outscoring the Rams 4-1 in the third quarter, and playing even through the final quarter for the 17-11 final score.

Enumclaw's scoring was led by Bennon VanHoof, with six goals. Thomas Petersen scored three, and Mason Culp added two for the Hornets.

The Hornet squad travels to Tacoma on Saturday for the annual jamboree at Wilson High School. The Hornets play their first game at 1:15.

Hornets Open Season With 14-11 Win Over Puyallup

The Enumclaw High School Boys Water Polo Team opened the 2011 season with a 14-11 win over the Puyallup Vikings on Thursday, September 8.

Both teams went scoreless in the first three minutes of the game; the visiting Hornets got on the scoreboard first, when junior Thomas Petersen scored with 3:51 left in the opening quarter. The two teams traded scores through the rest of the first period, holding a 3-3 tie going into the second quarter. The Hornets outscored the Vikings 3-0 in the second period, to hold a 6-3 advantage at halftime.

The two teams played even through the third period, giving Enumclaw an 8-5 lead after three quarters. During the final quarter, both teams showed some fatigue on defense, as both offenses were able to find the open man. Both teams scored six goals in the final period, led by Enumclaw's Bennon VanHoof, with four goals in the fourth quarter.

VanHoof was Enumclaw's leading scorer for the game, with nine goals. Also scoring for the Hornets were Thomas Petersen, with three goals, Mason Culp and Gabe Sales with one each.

The Hornet JV squad also came home with a win, beating the Puyallup JV 12-2. The Hornets were led by Riley Sexton's four goals. Other Hornets scoring in the JV game were Seth Rickard with three goals, Bryce VanHoof with two, and Quinn Warner, River Cory, and Patrick Peet with one goal each.

The Hornets travel to Puyallup again on Friday, facing the Rogers Rams at Rogers High School, on Puyallup's South Hill.
